Moreno by Pravin Wilkins - ★★★☆☆
Last week we headed to Theatre 503 to watch Moreno by Pravin Wilkins.
Luis Moreno is an all star NFL player, and following an injury he is back on the field playing for a new team alongside Ezekiel, Crevon and Danny (Joseph Black, Hayden Mclean, Matt Whitchurch).
As they prepare for what could be a record breaking season, Kapernick’s decision to take the knee shakes the landscape of NFL, and Moreno (and team) is forced to decide whether he’s prepared to take a stand, and in turn risk his career.
Through each character response to Kapernick’s decision, Moreno provides a layered and diverse commentary on the intersection of sports, racism and politics. Ezekiel leads the charge, as the intellect of the group whereas Danny thinks wokeness and these conversations have no place in the world of NFL. Crevon is joker of the group, and responsible for many comedic moments within the show, and his brotherhood with Moreno is lovely to watch.
While Theatre 503 is a cosy theatre, the set and lighting is impressive. Within the 4 walls of the theatre we’re transported between the testosterone filled locker room, the pitch, and post match press conferences.
As the play moves from one scene the next, the transitions are supported by a mix of music and snippets from Kaepernick’s speeches.
For what it explores, Moreno is a fresh and relevant play. And while our interest dwindled in parts, for a debut play is timely, vibrant and well cast.
Moreno is showing at Theatre503 until 26 March.
