Sessions, is a one man play following Tunde (Joseph Black) as his 30th birthday approaches and his mental health deteriorates. Tunde has stopped going to the gym and a recent one-night stand ended in tears - his.

As a result, Tunde’s reluctantly starts going to therapy in the lead up to the big 30. We go with him on this journey, as we’re invited to learn the causes of his deteriorating mental state. We get an insight into his relationship (or lack of) with his father, his search for a new job, money troubles and the breakdown of his relationship with his girlfriend. All of these events build up and Tunde no longer knows how to ‘swim’.

This is where he [Joseph Black] excels - in his ability to bring the audience into the corners of Tunde’s depression with a special tenderness and authenticity.

We will forever have an appreciation for one-man shows, and that appreciation extends to Black who seamlessly switches from moments of light hearted comedy to those of emotional distress . And, for us this is where he excels - in his ability to bring the audience into the corners of Tunde’s depression with a special tenderness and authenticity.

Ifeyinwa Frederick’s Sessions is an engaging and emotional show that explores the many layers to depression, masculinity and paternal relationships. You can catch it showing at Soho Theatre until 04 December.
